Collaborate for Free Tutoring

Edumentors collaborates with organizations to offer free or low-cost tutoring to students who are facing housing instability. For example, we partnered with a local charity to provide virtual academic support to 50 students so they wouldn't fall behind in their schoolwork. Such programs prioritize consistency and access, ensuring stability for students during unstable times. The resources used are tailored, such as recorded lessons and flexible schedules, to further support these unique needs. Education is a lifeline, offering hope and opportunity.

Create Comprehensive Support Resources

My school has an intricate set of resources to support students who are experiencing the challenge of homelessness. We have a dedicated person who serves as our McKinney-Vento liaison to provide families with information about potential housing, health care, etc. We also created The BlueMarket and Blutique, where students are able to "shop" and get canned goods or clothing items. Our team is dedicated to ensuring students receive everything they need in order to focus on their academics, so we also provide them with bookbags filled with supplies (upon request) at the beginning of the school year and connect them with our social worker or school psychologist to support them during the course of the school year. Wraparound services are critical to our success, and partnering with local community-based organizations (CBO) has been instrumental to our success in providing material items and additional wraparound services.

Assign Dedicated Liaisons

Schools assign dedicated liaisons whose primary role is to assist students experiencing homelessness and their families. These liaisons serve as a bridge between the student and the resources available within the school district. They help ensure that homeless students can access the education and services they are entitled to.

By being directly involved in the students' school life, they can provide tailored support and guidance. This includes advocating for the student's specific needs and addressing any barriers to education. Everyone involved should continue to champion the rights of homeless students to ensure they thrive academically and personally.

Provide Transportation Assistance

Providing transportation assistance is crucial in supporting homeless students’ education. Without reliable transportation, many homeless students would struggle to attend school consistently, leading to gaps in their learning. Schools arrange for buses or other means of transport to pick up and drop off these students, ensuring they don’t miss out on their education.

This service addresses one of the significant challenges faced by homeless families. It helps maintain a routine and stability in the students' lives. Collective effort is needed to ensure every homeless child finds their way to school each day without fail.

Offer Essential Hygiene Facilities

Access to essential hygiene facilities and resources plays a vital role in helping homeless students maintain their dignity and focus on learning. Schools often provide shower facilities, clean clothes, and hygiene products so that students can attend school feeling clean and prepared. This support helps them avoid the embarrassment and stigma that can come with being homeless.

It also allows them to concentrate better in class and participate fully in school activities. Ensuring these resources are readily available can make a significant difference in the lives of these students. Support efforts should continue to keep these facilities well-stocked and accessible.

Implement Free Meal Programs

Offering free breakfast and lunch programs is a key strategy schools use to combat food insecurity among homeless students. Adequate nutrition is essential for students' physical health and their ability to concentrate and learn effectively. These meal programs provide homeless students with reliable access to nutritious food every school day.

This ensures that no child has to worry about hunger while trying to learn. By removing this barrier, schools help level the playing field for homeless students. It's important to advocate for the continuation and expansion of these meal programs to reach all students in need.

Provide Mental Health Services

Mental health services available within schools are important for addressing the emotional and psychological needs of homeless students. Homelessness can be incredibly stressful and traumatizing, impacting a student's ability to focus and succeed in school. School-based counselors and psychologists provide a safe space for these students to talk about their experiences and receive support.

They help students develop coping strategies and resilience. This emotional support is essential for their overall well-being and academic success. Efforts should be made to increase the availability and accessibility of mental health services in schools.
