7 Teaching Methods that Proved More Valuable Than Initially Expected

I initially dismissed A/B testing as unnecessary for our internal teaching workflows, viewing it as better suited for marketing than professional development. After being persuaded to test different onboarding approaches for new Comligo teachers, I discovered its tremendous value when we found that including a short self-assessment video improved long-term teacher retention by 30%. This experience taught me that systematic testing applies to educational methodology just as much as other fields, and I now consider it an essential part of our continuous improvement process.

One teaching method I initially dismissed was using short, low-stakes assessments during sessions, such as quick check-ins or mini quizzes. I used to think they might interrupt the flow of a lesson or make students anxious. However, after observing our tutors use them effectively, I realized how valuable they are for understanding what students truly grasp in the moment.

What convinced me was how much clearer the learning progress became. These short assessments helped tutors catch misconceptions early and adjust their approach immediately, instead of waiting until a test or major assignment. Students also began to feel more comfortable making mistakes because the stakes were low, which made learning more collaborative and less stressful. It turned out to be one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to improve both engagement and outcomes.

Gamification in education has shown surprising benefits in boosting student engagement and knowledge retention. By turning learning into a game-like experience, students become more invested in the material and actively participate in the learning process. This approach taps into the natural human desire for competition and achievement, making even challenging subjects more approachable and enjoyable.

The use of points, badges, and leaderboards creates a sense of progress and accomplishment, encouraging students to push themselves further. Teachers looking to improve classroom engagement should consider implementing gamification techniques in their lessons.

Peer teaching has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing comprehension for both the teacher and the learner. When students explain concepts to their classmates, they reinforce their own understanding and identify gaps in their knowledge. This method encourages active learning and promotes a collaborative classroom environment.

The process of articulating ideas helps students develop communication skills and gain confidence in their abilities. Educators should explore ways to incorporate peer teaching opportunities into their curriculum to foster a more interactive and supportive learning community.

Flipped classrooms have proven to be an efficient way to maximize in-person learning time. This method involves students reviewing lecture materials at home and using class time for discussions, problem-solving, and hands-on activities. By shifting the passive learning component outside the classroom, teachers can dedicate more time to addressing individual student needs and facilitating deeper understanding.

This approach also encourages students to take more responsibility for their learning and come to class prepared to engage. Schools should consider adopting the flipped classroom model to create a more dynamic and effective learning environment.

Project-based learning has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in developing practical skills among students. This approach allows learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. By working on long-term projects, students learn valuable skills such as time management, teamwork, and perseverance.

The hands-on nature of project-based learning makes abstract concepts more tangible and relevant to students' lives. Educators should incorporate more project-based assignments into their curriculum to better prepare students for future academic and professional challenges.

Microlearning has shown significant improvements in long-term information recall among students. This method involves breaking down complex topics into small, digestible chunks of information that can be quickly consumed and easily remembered. By presenting information in brief, focused sessions, students can avoid cognitive overload and retain knowledge more effectively.

Microlearning also allows for more frequent review and reinforcement of key concepts, which is crucial for long-term memory formation. Teachers should experiment with incorporating microlearning techniques into their lessons to enhance student retention and overall learning outcomes.
